2007-2008 Theme: "I Can Make A Difference By... "

Local Unit deadlines: TXPTA suggests October 31 however each local unit can set their own deadline. Be sure to publicize your unit's deadline and adhere to it-there might be those who do not receive the message that the deadline has been extended and might miss out on finishing touches or submitting an entry.

Birdville Council will adhere to TXPTA's suggested deadline of November 30-drop off times and location yet to be determined.

Judging entries: It is suggested that you have judges who are in the profession of the category they are judging. Contact a local photography or arts club, perhaps one of the dance studios. Judges should be neutral in their judging and all should be made aware of the judging criteria prior to the judging session. Judges should be honored for their time with a certificate of appreciation or a gift of some kind-consider a donation made in their name.

Council will use professional judges, one from each of the six categories, and they will all agree on the 20% advancing onto Area 17. Council will honor the judges' decision. Council will not publicize who our judges are to ensure neutrality; however the judges will be approved by a council executive board committee of three.

Local Unit advancing entries: Local units can advance 20% (rounding to the nearest %) of all entries regardless of category. Advancing the top entries overall will allow for those multiple entries that excel in one category to all be equally considered. If the 20% results in less than six entries per division (i.e. primary, intermediate, middle/junior, senior), the unit may submit up to six entries, theoretically one per category. See page 30 or the TXPTA Arts in Education Chairman's Guide. There is a gray area in advancing entries that will be covered in the Reflections How-To session 8 a.m. September 20 at the Coliseum.

Council will advance to Area 17 20% of all entries submitted from local units.

Each entry must have no identifying marks located on the front of the work such as the student's name.

Each entry must have a completed submission form attached on the back or with the tape cassette/video cassette.

All advancing entries must be excellent representations of the Reflections theme.

Other important information: Sturdy backing such as mat board, foam core or corrugated cardboard is needed for Visual Arts and Photography entries to ensure proper care. See page 36 of the TXPTA Arts in Education Chairman's Guide. Students are encouraged to provide their own mounting and matting, as desired. A chair may, however, mount an entry when necessary. This is acceptable as a way of protecting the work-no alterations should be made in an attempt to improve the presentation of the work.

Honoring your participants: Be sure to honor all participants in your Reflections Program with a medal, ribbon or certificate. TXPTA has items available to purchase-check out the members' only section of their website under Resources/On-line catalogue www.txpta.org. All students should be proud of their work regardless of advancing to the next round or not.

The Council will honor each local unit advancing entries with a certificate of participation and will honor the 20% advancing entries to Area 17 at the February 7, 2008 Founders' Day/Reflections Celebration. Each honoree will receive a medal and certificate as well as having their work showcased. Council will provide a list of honorees to each president and will send a formal announcement to the student via mail. Each local unit is asked to consider paying for the honoree and at least one parent for the students who will be honored at Founders' Day. Each local unit will be responsible for sending in the honorees/one parent's meal tickets payment along with any other payments for meal tickets they wish to purchase. Meal tickets will then be sent back to the local units to hand out to their attendees.

A change to the Founders' Day agenda will include, with association consent, moving the Awards and Reflections presentations after the opening portion of the meeting. We will have a guest speaker that will be worth staying for however this will allow for those who want to get their children home the opportunity to leave at this time.
